How could we put out an issue all about scene queens and emo culture without mentioning the 1980s? The decade that inspired the movement in the early 2000s. https://www.pinterest.ca/ticthezine/1980s/
Just like teenagers in 2017 were drawing inspiration from the 90s, emo and scene teenagers in the early 2000s pulled from the 80s. To us the 80s were a strange time that we knew only through pictures of our parents and hand me downs from older siblings.
Who knows if it was intentional but 80s fashion played a huge role in scene culture.
Huge fashion magazines have already started to report that the 80s will be a mainstream fashion trend this year and we’ve seen the influence sweep the runways.
So how can we take this over the top, dated look and twist it to fit our modern needs?
Well, lets have a look from the top down
HAIR
The higher the hair, the higher you are because of all the damn hairspray.
It’s time to dig out your teasing comb and pick up some hairspray, we’re going big.
In the 80s hair was a big deal. Specifically how big it was. For 2019 though let’s leave the frizz back in the 80s where it belongs and aim to achieve big, healthy looking hair that moves naturally.
The best way to keep your hair looking healthy is by using preventative measures. Here are my 5 hair success rules, you won’t like them all. I promise you.
01) play to your strengths
If you were not born a blonde, maintaining blonde hair will cause your hair to look damaged. You need to have a plan for this and keep in mind, multiple bleachings will increase this effect until you’re frying it all off.
Tic recommends only having a hairdresser bleach your hair, they will do it slowly over a few visits and you might end up rocking some strange colours during those weeks.. Buy a hat babe.
Once you’re at the blonde you want you will need to buy new shampoo and conditioner, get something with purple tint to keep brassy tones away and also grab an ultra hydrating hair mask or learn to make your own (coconut oil is great).
If you do everything right and still have dry, damaged, dull looking hair then it might be time to accept your fate and start living life as a brunette. I promise you, it’s not all that bad.
This matters no matter which colour you’re thinking off, you need to check to see if it will work with your skin tone. If you don’t know your skin tone and undertones you should find out because this won’t just help you with your hair, it will help with makeup and clothes as well.
02) accept defeat
Nothing will ruin your look quite like hair that needs to be cut off. We’ve all been there, maybe you botched a home dye job, maybe you turned your straightener up too high, perhaps you used a sea salt spray before going to the beach.
If it needs to be cut off, it needs to be cut off. No amount of hair creams, masks, or oils, will make it look healthy. It’s ok babes, it grows back.
Find a hairdresser you trust, let them know you’re feeling nervous about it, do research about your face shape and which cuts will flatter you. If you hate it, now you know that you don’t like that cut and you just have to find one you do like or wait a few days until it’s not so new and see how you feel.
03) use every tool you have
Take supplements. This is something that a lot of people overlook. I’m not talking about those overpriced gummies either, I’m talking about L-cystine and Biotin. These will work differently for every person and don’t expect a miracle. Your Tic editor has used an undisclosed hair supplement that contains both L-cystine and biotin and saw results. Hair grew faster for sure, but the best result was that it was also shinier and stronger.
04) don’t wash it every day
Your scalp produces oils that keep your hair healthy. Washing it everyday with harsh soaps will seriously interfere with this process. If your hair is curly this is even more important because the oils take longer to travel down the hair shaft when it’s not straight.
You’re only as strong as the weakest link in your beauty routine so make sure you’re using a shampoo that works for you. Dandruff shampoos really do work, if you have sensitive skin you may need something more natural without sodium laureth sulfate, you can rinse your hair and get it wet on the days you don’t wash it, I promise you it won’t smell bad babes
05) limit heat tools
You know it, heat styling hurts your hair. I don’t need to explain this one, learn some no heat styling methods and turn the heat down on your hair dryer and straightener when you can. Sure it will take longer, but your hair will last longer
FACE
There are only two words you need to remember to achieve the 80s makeup ideal,
Bold, and Colourful.
If you ever find yourself holding back, not sure if a bold lip is okay to pair with your heavy blush and tri colour smoky eye then now is the time to indulge yourself.
Defined brows, rainbow eye looks, dark blush, and bright lips all at the same time is not only acceptable, it’s encouraged.
CLOTHES
A lot of 80s style is a little hard to put an alternative twist on. Our favourite way to find alternative 80s fashion inspiration here at Tic is to look to some of the biggest, raddest, rock stars of the era and what they were wearing. Lately we’ve been obsessed with Stevie Nicks.
Stevie has a beautiful boho meets rock and roll goddess look, think ballerina, floaty, textured, dreamy pieces. A lot of her looks have a 70s edge so keep an eye out in thrift stores and vintage resellers. If you can pick up one or two statement pieces from the decade you’re aiming for you can really pull your look together without having to mimic every piece you’re wearing.
If boho isn’t really your thing then there’s Madonna. The key to replicating the material girls style is to experiment. Madonnas willingness to enter new territory with her style inspired a whole generation of women to do the same. Sure they started by copying her looks exactly but eventually they branched of and forged their own paths, following her lead by experimenting.
If you don’t know when enough is enough then you can add in the age old fashion rule from Coco Chanel, “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off.”
If all of these 80s looks are still too extreme for you, keep it simple. High waisted shorts, ruffles on skirts and dresses, bows, tall socks worn bunched down like leg warmers, kitten heels, and crop tops can all help you join in this bold, wonderful trend.
Tic Pilot was written in January 2019 and never published until now. It’s not exactly relevant anymore but I enjoyed writing it xoxo Arienette
